As a frequent wedding attendee, I've noticed that rustic weddings are becoming more and more popular, especially on our side of Southeast North Carolina. Whenever I receive an invitation to a rustic wedding, I always ponder the question: what should I wear to a rustic wedding? Something that is not too classy but won't steal the spotlight from the bride's wedding dress. Luckily, I've gained some experience after attending quite a few of these weddings, and now I'd like to share it with you.

Dressing tips for men

For men, the dress code for a country wedding is relatively simple. There is no need to wear a formal tuxedo, a slightly more formal casual outfit will do.

I usually choose a clean pair of khakis or gray pants with an ironed, flat shirt and a pair of comfortable canvas shoes for my husband.

This is a great look for all seasons. But remember, jeans and flip-flops are best avoided unless specifically stated.

Dressing Suggestions for the Ladies

The ladies have a much more diverse selection. For the spring and summer seasons, I usually choose a knee-length or slightly above-the-knee guest dress that is elegant but not overwhelming in the southern heat.

Such a dress can be short-sleeved, sleeveless, or have long flowing sleeves, but preferably not strapless. Strapless dresses are more suited for a party in the backyard than a wedding. Pairing it with ankle boots, sandals or wedges is a good choice. However, I would avoid heels if you're going to be walking on grass.

In the fall and winter, there are more options. Winter guest dresses can be as simple and neat as a long-sleeved skirt with tights and boots, or a long dress with a pair of formal shoes. If you're not a fan of skirts, a long dress with a nice top is also a good choice. These ensembles can be completed with heels or boots, but avoid sandals or flip-flops.

Accessories, hair and makeup

As for accessories, hair and makeup, since they apply to all seasons, they should be kept simple and sophisticated. I usually let my hair go down naturally or do a simple up-do. Depending on the season, an updo can sometimes be a smarter choice!

As for jewelry, I'll choose some prominent earrings as accents, but keep the rest of my accessories understated to complement the overall look. Makeup should also be simple, especially in the warmer months when the heat and humidity of the south can affect it. My motto is "less is more".
